Laura Koon is a certified Physician Assistant who works at the West Creek location. She attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences in 2008, and her Master of Physician Assistant degree in 2009. During her clinical rotations, she took a special interest in Internal Medicine with a focus on adult health. She began her career practicing Family Medicine in an underserved area of North Carolina. In 2010, she moved to the Richmond area and began practicing as a Gastroenterology PA.
Gastroenterology can be a complex specialty, and because there is very little black-and-white about it, patients are often frustrated by their symptoms. I try to build a relationship with each patient and really take the time to listen to them, to help them understand their problems, and ultimately to make them feel better.
Laura is certified by the NCCPA and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She is also a member of the American Gastroenterology Association. As a PA, she is required to stay up to date on all areas of general medicine, so her continuing medical education includes a diverse array of topics.
Within the realm of her GI practice, Laura cares for a wide range of conditions, including GERD, peptic ulcer disease, pancreatitis, hepatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases, and colon cancer prevention. She has a special interest in viral hepatitis treatment.
Laura grew up in central Pennsylvania, but has lived in the Carolinas and Virginia for most of her adult life. She decided to make Richmond her permanent home in 2010. She married her current husband in 2015, and between them they have six grown children and two grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, reading, sewing, relaxing at the river, and spending time with her family.
