Rachel Sawyers, PA-C, is a certified Physician Assistant at Richmond Gastroenterology Associates. Rachel sees patients at the Midlothian Center office in Chesterfield, Virginia.
She attended Virginia Tech (VT) in Blacksburg, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise and graduated Magna Cum Laude from that program. She completed a dietetic internship at Emory University Hospital and worked as a dietitian for four years in the Roanoke area.
In her role as a dietitian, Rachel’s concentration was on critically ill surgical patients. During this time, she decided to re-focus on her love for medicine and her desire to have a more direct impact on patient care.
To help make this transition, she earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Shenandoah University (SU) in Winchester. She received the Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award, which is presented to the student in the class with the highest marks from the program preceptors.
After graduating from the Physician Assistant program, Rachel relocated to the Roanoke area and worked for the Carilion Clinic in Family Medicine. She worked there until early 2018 when she moved to Richmond.
Given her nutrition, food, and diet background, the transition to a Physician Assistant role at Richmond Gastroenterology Associates was seamless.
“I want my patients to participate and take an interest in their care. My role is to help patients understand their condition and encourage them to be a part of the decision-making regarding their care. That empowers my patients to make changes for their health.”
Rachel and her husband have two children. In her spare time, she enjoys working out, cooking, and reading.
