Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the lower portion of the rectum or anus. There are many different treatment options, if home remedies such as dietary modification and topical treatments have not sufficed. In some cases, we may perform one of these procedures:
Hemorrhoid Banding
Hemorrhoid banding is a minimally invasive procedure to treat internal hemorrhoids. The gastroenterologist uses a special banding tool to place a rubber band on the hemorrhoidal tissue. This reduces blood flow and creates shrinking/scarring down of the hemorrhoidal tissue. This is a painless procedure that can be done quickly, without any bowel prep, and does not require sedation. This can be done in our office.
Bipolar Ligation of Hemorrhoids
The HET bipolar system treats mild to moderate internal hemorrhoid disease, by combining gentle pressure and heat to target and reduce blood flow to the hemorrhoid, which results in decreased tissue swelling. It is an effective and gentle treatment for internal hemorrhoids. The gastroenterologist can perform this procedure at the time of a colonoscopy. The HET system allows multiple hemorrhoids to be treated in a single visit, and is associated with no significant discomfort and few complications. Patients may resume normal activity the following day.
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. I want to take this opportunity to help you better understand colon cancer and the role colonoscopy can play in prevention of this cancer.
