PEG is performed during an upper endoscopy procedure. The gastroenterologist positions a flexible feeding tube into the stomach through the abdominal wall. This allows the patient to receive nutrition, fluids, and medication directly into the stomach. Patients who are experiencing difficulty swallowing, or are unable to get enough food or liquids by mouth, may need this procedure.
